Canadian Championship - Game 4
To start off it’s interesting to see Toronto lining up with a 4-3-3 at the beginning having Ricketts and Robert pushing forward with Dichio. Despite being able to get a few plays going, TFC looked too thin in the back and as a result were punished with a barrage of Whitecap attacks in the first half. Out of frustration Jim Bennan brought down Jeff Clarke inside the box which resulted in a penalty. Greg Sutton in his usual PK form jumped off the line early only to get it wrong and let Vancouver go ahead 1-0.
At half time John Carver used all three of his substitutions in a somewhat baffling strategy leaving the reds without any insurance for the rest of the match. The second half was dominated by TFC with Jeff Cunningham sneaking in what looked like his career 100th goal only to be denied on a late offside call. Amando Guevara and Jarred Smith each laid on the pressure putting forth solid efforts on net. To his credit Whitecaps goalkeeper Jay Nolly stood on his head to keep the Vancouver side in the game.
It should be noted that this game had two interesting spectators in Darren Huckerby and Paul Dickov. I get the impression that John Carver was experimenting with his line up today and is not fully committed to the season until he has the first team he desires. Why else would he give 45 minutes to each of his subs without any possible plan for further changes.
Perhaps Manchester City 2003 could reign again in Toronto this year?
It doesn’t seem that far fetched to acquire both Huckerby and Dickov. Move Cunny off the squad to free up a second international roster spot, sign the 32 year hold Huckerby as a DP after July 15th and we only take a $200000 hit on salary cap and then sign 35 year old Dickov to a near league max contract and bingo! You have your 2008 MLS champions….. it could happen.
